Application Market Prospects and Challenges of ePTFE Membranes

Publish Time: 2021-08-30     Origin: Site

ePTFE membrane is a new type of polymer material, with a micron or sub-micron porous three-dimensional network microstructure. The ePTFE membrane is made of PTFE resin by special processing methods such as stretching and turning. While maintaining the excellent chemical properties of PTFE, the multifunctional ePTFE membrane can achieve different functions and uses by changing the structure, shape, thickness, and surface geometry of the material, and then matching with auxiliary materials of different characteristics.

ePTFE membrane has excellent characteristics such as high chemical stability, high and low temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, weather resistance, high lubrication, good non-adhesion, electrical insulation, and good biocompatibility.

The main raw materials for the manufacturing and processing of ePTFE membrane and its components are high-performance PTFE resin, PP, PE and other polymer materials. Such raw materials belong to petrochemical products. Due to its special properties in acoustic, electrical, magnetic, thermal and other aspects, ePTFE membranes and their components have been widely used in automotive, consumer electronics, new energy, medical, clothing, industrial filtration, aerospace and other fields.

Market Prospects of ePTFE Membrane Industry

Most of the application areas of ePTFE membranes belong to niche markets. However, due to the wide range of application fields of ePTFE membranes, even if the market space for some applications is not large, the market space for all applications is still considerable.

1. Automotive

With the continuous emergence of demand for light source upgrades and intelligent applications, the value of automotive lamps has a higher potential for value enhancement than other auto parts.

According to the design of different vehicle lights, the amount of breathable plug and breathable membrane for each vehicle lamp is different. Under normal circumstances, each car generally has 6 headlights (3 pairs of taillights, headlights, and fog lights). Each taillight uses 1 ventilating plug product or 1 ventilating membrane product on average. Each headlight uses an average of 4 ventilation plug products or 2 ventilation membrane products. Each fog lamp uses an average of 1 ventilation plug product. In the automotive field, the main air-permeable membranes used in car lights are thin PTFE film, expanded PTFE membrane and skived PTFE film.

2. Consumer Electronics

Each mobile phone uses an average of 3 water-pressure-resistant sound-permeable membranes.

3. New energy vehicle field

With the gradual popularity of new energy vehicles, it is expected that the market space for pressure relief valves will further increase in the future. Each power battery pack uses SiO2 aerogel composite material. It is expected that the market space of SiO2 aerogel composite materials will further expand in the future.

4. Medical coating equipment

Medical coating equipment is mainly used in medical packaging, medicinal plasters and other fields. The medical packaging industry is growing rapidly, and the market size has exceeded 100 billion. The market prospects for high-end medical coating equipment including gas line sealant tape are very broad.

Challenges Facing the Development of the Industry

The main challenge lies in the trade barriers and the market is still in the development stage. The application range of new materials such as PTFE microporous film and ePTFE color membranes still needs to be expanded. Companies in the industry are facing the challenge of actively cultivating the needs of downstream customers.
