Pipeline leak-proof tapes are widely used in pipelines, allowing homeowners to easily repair small leaks. Professional plumbers sometimes use tape under certain circumstances. How does pipe leaking tape work in emergency situations?

 

 

What is pipe leakproof tape

Two types of tape are commonly used in leaking pipe repairs: pipe thread tape and silicone tape. Both are usually available at hardware stores. What are their differences and characteristics?

 

Pipe thread tape

Pipe thread tape is also called "thread sealing tape", "PTFE tape", "Teflon tape" or "plumber tape". It is used to help form a watertight seal between plumbing joints and to lubricate the connection between the joints, so that the threaded connection is smoother and easier to disassemble in future plumbing conditions.

 

Silicone tape

Silicone tape is also called "self-fusing tape" or "self-fusing tape" due to its self-adhesive properties. Unlike other tapes, it does not stick to the pipe; it only applies to itself. Silicone tape can be wrapped around leaks in the pipeline to form a long-lasting waterproof temporary seal.

 

 

When to use each type of plumbing tape

Pipe threads and silicone have very different applications. Knowing which one to use is essential to get a positive result for your plumbing problem. Pipe thread tape cannot effectively solve the problem of non-joint pipeline leakage. Therefore, do not apply silicone tape on pipe threads.

 

Leaking joints

If your pipe joints are leaking, it may be because the connection between them is loose, or the connection of the sealing tape or putty is worn. This is common for older pipelines. Pipe thread tape can help solve these two problems. If you are sure that the leak is from the joint, then duct tape is your answer.

 

Rupture leak

When the pipeline ages or is damaged in some way, thin wire breaks and other leaks can occur. If the leak is clearly coming from the middle of the pipe rather than the joint, it may be a rupture. Silicone tape can help form a temporary waterproof seal to prevent water leakage when you seek a permanent repair.

 

How to use pipe leakproof tape

Pipe thread tape for leaking joints

First, turn off the water. Then, unscrew the leaking pipe joint. Please note which method must be used to tighten the pipe and unscrew it from the joint.

Next, remove the worn seal ring and apply pipe thread tape. Wrap the tape on the threads in the direction opposite to the direction of screwing back into the pipe. Starting with the second thread at the bottom, wrap the tape four to six times. Make sure the tape fits tightly to the threads. After winding the end of the pipe, screw the pipe back into the joint and test for leaks.

 

Silicone tape to prevent cracks from leaking

In the first step, you have to keep releasing the water until you find a leak. After determining the location of the leak, turn off the water source. Dry the pipe area around the leak as much as possible, and then start to wrap it with tape.

Wrap the tape as tightly as possible and overlap it several times. By wrapping tape around the area around the spill, you can also provide yourself with additional safety protection. Make sure that the seal you want to create is as tight as possible on the pipe for best results.
